Description

The Dying Party is climate-fiction that depicts what could happen to the human psyche, as individuals and as a race, when they send out the call that we have passed the climate change tipping point and it has officially become too late to save the planet. The novel illustrates how the global impact of this announcement could manifest geopolitically and socio-economically, and it has the courage to see this through to its logical conclusion, making it the cautionary tale to end all cautionary tales.

Set in the late 2040s, as the planet is spiraling down, The Dying Party has two parallel storylines in alternating chapters, and two intriguing sets of characters. In this way, it explores the differences and similarities regarding the likely fate of the rich and powerful versus that of the less fortunate majority in such a scenario.

On the one hand, we have the shrinking world of six people trapped in a residential complex built into the side of Gros Morne, Newfoundland’s only mountain – the last six left alive on the only piece of land still above water in all of Eastern Canada. On the other, we have the machinations and the surreptitious quest of a large faction of elite political and financial figures, desperately trying to build and escape to an off-Earth colony. Running side by side, the storylines race to meet and merge later in the bleak, ever-darkening future they share. But as brutally honest as The Dying Party needs to be, the narrative unfolds with empathy and tenderness amid the darkness, and it wins a measure of redemption out of its sobering conclusion.
